Can I move or scratch an itch while meditating?
Yes, you’re allowed to move. Meditation isn’t a test of stillness, and you don’t have to suffer through an itch or an aching leg.
The mindful approach
When an itch or the urge to shift shows up, try this:
- Notice it first. Feel the sensation and the urge to react to it.
- Pause for a breath, if you can, and watch whether the urge rises and fades on its own. Often it does.
- If it doesn’t pass, move. Scratch the itch or adjust your position slowly and deliberately, then return to your anchor.
Why bother noticing first?
Sitting with a small discomfort for a moment is good practice: you learn that sensations come and go, and that you don’t have to instantly obey every urge. That’s a skill that helps well beyond the cushion.
But this is about gentle awareness, not endurance. If you’re in real pain or genuinely uncomfortable, adjust. A comfortable body makes for a steadier mind.
