Can I meditate lying down?

Yes, you can absolutely meditate lying down. The “right” posture is the one that lets you be relaxed but alert, and for some people, some of the time, that’s lying down.

When lying down is a great choice

  • Sleep and relaxation practices: lying in bed is often the point.
  • Body scans: they work beautifully on your back.
  • Physical pain or limitations: if sitting is uncomfortable, don’t force it.

The one trade-off

Lying down makes it easier to fall asleep. That’s perfect if sleep is the goal, but if you’re trying to build focus and stay awake, you may find sitting upright keeps you more alert.

A middle ground

If you want the comfort of lying down without drifting off, try lying on a firm surface (like the floor) rather than a soft bed, with your knees bent or a pillow under them. Comfortable, but not too cozy.

Do what lets you actually show up and practice. A meditation you’ll do lying down beats a “proper” one you skip.
